Instructions for cellphone polar alignment for the Move Shoot Move (MSM) star tracker setup.

Included:
  1. MSM rotator
  2. MSM wedge
  3. MSM V platform
  4. MSM cellphone mount
  5. cables etc.
Need to add:
  1. tripod
  2. cellphone with Photo Pills app
  3. ball head
  4. camera and lens

Steps.

USB Charge

Seems only the original cable fits in perfectly. Battery indicator turns green when fully charged.

Hold button (next to battery indicator) to turn on/off. Press to switch between northern and southern hemispheres.

Press other button to toggle between modes:

  1. Full star = 24 hours/360°
  2. 1/2 star = 48 hours/360°
  3. other modes are for degree steps, e.g. 0.1°


Rotator side: add 3/8" screw with stopper

Wedge plate mounts perpendicular on side of tracker

Wedge inclines up to 90° only. Note 3/8" screw is on the other side.

V platform goes on 3/8" rotator screw

Note the laser and polar scope bracket also shown, not needed here.

Cellphone mount goes in non-rotating side with 3/8" screw

Make cellphone screen parallel to MS box.

Photo Pills cellphone app

Remove the phone from the magnetic case.

  1. Download and install app.

  2. Assuming the sun is visible, in daytime, you can calibrate the AR (Augmented Reality) view by Pills > Sun > AR (on bottom menu) > Visual Calibration.

    1. Wave the phone in a figure-8. Complete 4 or 5 loops. (Magnetic field compensation.)
    2. Line the AR sun with the real sun by swiping the display.

    At night, you can calibrate the AR view similarly by Pills > Moon > AR > Visual Calibration.

  3. Navigate to Pills > Spot Stars > AR (bottom left corner of screen)

    Adjust tripod and wedge position so the black dot for the North Celestial Pole lines up with the crosshairs at the center of the phone screen.


  4. Appendix 1

    For correct augmented reality (AR) view, set height of cellphone above ground.

    How to use Fluorescent illuminator? Please use your headlamp or phone light to shine the light first, the paper inside will absorb the light and then glow in the dark.
